And the Wars Go On...

I never thought that I would be in a military family. I now realize that due to the way this country is organized by those in power, one of the purposes of the working class is indeed to be ultimately troops for the military industrial complex.

I have considered myself a lifelong pacifist believing that the hardest task a person can undertake is not to engage in physical or violent conflict in the face of injustice or violence. That is not to be translated into being passive. I instead believe that constant mediation, negotiation, education and communication are harder tools to utilize legitimately and relentlessly in the face of oppression.

Yet, I am by definition a Gold Star Stepmother to a Marine killed in 2004. I am also a Blue Star aunt to an Army Corporal who as of August 2008 is engaged in battle at the Afghanistan / Pakistan border.

My perceptions on wartime and peacetime are radically different than before my own family members came to have boots on the ground. My own blood and heart and flesh have sweated through both Iraq and Afghanistan hot nights. Loved ones are left behind: Fathers, Brothers, Children, Mothers... My cross is to wait and grieve with them over the sacrifices that have been made.
